+To get them ready for `btrfs` I used:

+* `fdisk` to create new GPT partition tables on each and blow away the old ones.
+* Had to use `sudo cryptsetup luksClose` on the previously-encrypted backup

+* `wipefs` to finish cleaning them completely.
